- The Jack-n-the-Box ad where the young intern asks what Jack's "clock bracelet" (watch) is is pretty genius I must say.
- This was one of the highest scoring weeks in NFL history and saw some of the craziest finishes in recent memory.
- This, combined with Auburn vs. FSU for all the marbles means this football season is turning out to be pretty solid.
- A bunch of ice came into the Dallas area and royally ruined my plans. Instead of being awesome outside, I had to sit at home all weekend. Sort of like The Shining.
- The Bears are slight favorites over the mighty Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in what should be a good game. Unlike every other Monday night game this year it seems!
Friends and companies we plan to mention in this-here post include iDallas Realtor Group, DFW Granite Countertops, Goode Gutters and J & J Landscaping of North Dallas. Check them out because they are all good local companies who will treat you right.
Danny Woodhead makes a darn-fine #2 RB in most deep PPR formats I must say. Sure he splits time with THE Ryan Matthews (who I want no part of) but Rivers seems to trust him.
Did I mention the snow? It was actually more like ice. And ice it did. All over the place. I drove in from McKinney and it was a horrible idea.
One of the hottest trends in weddings here in north Dallas these days is the photo booth rental concept that companies like Plush Photo Pod have pioneered. You get a lasting memory of your big day or party and it's a great mini-event to take part in during the night. Plus you can do it at your leisure and not have an annoying photographer follow you around all night snapping pictures when you aren't ready.
Guests appreciate it because they get to take something home from the event and the ability to add these photos to Facebook and other social media sites is more and more common. Since everyone loves a memento, it makes sense to have a photo booth at your next big event if the price is right.
Photo booth rentals rank up there with ice sculptures and other great party tricks and the business model is one of the fastest growing and most in-demand in the area. Check out Plush to get an idea of what this concept is all about.
This week's sponsors include DFW Appliance Repairs, BT Apartment Movers, North Dallas Dent Repair and CWC Carpet Cleaning of Dallas. All great local companies.
Well, the Cowboys got Marino'ed this week by Highland Park native son Matt Stafford. Outside of the bitter defeat, which by this point I am used to as a long-suffering Cowboys fan, this game was notable for several reasons.
Today we spotlight Nathan at Manly Maids Pool Repair. An old buddy of mine called me to come take a look at a revolutionary new type of flat roofing application he developed. He owns a roofing and siding company in the Miami area and offered to fly me out. Since I love Miami and had some free time, I jumped at the chance.
We got to talking and my friend asked for some help with his website. Since his company is new and needing to get some momentum behind it, I was more than willing to help as I have been in these situations before with local roofers. My other buddy in Charlotte is a good example and proof that I know the roofing industry.
So what am I going to do? First, my Miami roofer needs a stronger social media presence, which I have set up. He will also need more pages added to his site and more correct ALT tags. Again, my specialty. On a side note, Miami was a blast but it's good to be home in North Dallas.
Mike at North Dallas Waterproofing, a buddy of mine, recently launched a patio waterproofing branch in the Houston, TX area that is just starting to get off the ground. Mike also handles chimney caps and is a general Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to construction and remodeling from what I can tell.
So what is waterproofing? Does it only apply to basements? No - in unpredictable weather areas such as Houston and Dallas, waterproofing can be a lifesaver for any homeowner. If you see leaks or dripping water from your patio or deck when it rains, you are a prime candidate for this procedure.
Since they are locally owned and operated and have been successful enough to expand to two markets, you know you are in good hands. I give Mike a big thumbs up and would highly recommend his services to anyone in Dallas or Houston who needs a quality home waterproofing assessment.
This was seriously the best the Dallas Football Cowboys have looked in a loooong time. If they go out and look half as good against the Chargers in week 4, this town will start to buzz.
Observations from Week 3:
The defense is good. I think they are overachieving and obviously that kind of play can't continue every week, especially against teams like Denver on our schedule, but Kiffin has figured out what Ryan couldn't last year.
Demarcus Ware became our all time franchise sack leader. Making me wonder why we ever bothered dropping him into coverage. When he's literally the best we've ever had at rushing the QB.
Sam Bradford is a fake QB. Who has been given ample time to figure it out.
Tony Romo is not a fake QB and has a top 5 QB rating in the league this year. I know it's early, but that should shut the Romo haters up. Or not.
Does anyone see the Super Bowl being anything other than Denver vs. Seattle in Eli's building?
Kudos to the Jags for putting up 17 points at Seattle.
The line on the Texas A&M at Arkansas game is 3 points. THREE POINTS? That's not a typo ladies and gentlemen.
Our friends at Overall Commercial Concrete Contractors in North Dallas recently contacted me about spotlighting their business. Their stamped patio concrete division recently came out to my house and the results looked amazing so I figured why not.
While they can handle residential installs with ease, their real sweet spot is handling commercial parking lot installation, much like my friend Sam at Advanced Paving, who also works in the same industry. Both companies did work for the Super Bowl when it was in Dallas - the only difference being that Overall also does the afore-mentioned stamped concrete work on decks and patios.
An example of a recent concrete paving project before and after:
In hyper-local news, the Blue Mesa that was once in the Addison shopping center has moved across the street to the old Ounce building. Ounce was some sort of steak place that I never went to and didn't really care to try out. Blue Mesa, on the other hand, has been a winner for me in the past.
My only complaint with this place, as the food is still quite good, is the service. It's not horrible, but it's.... awkward? I guess? You'll be greeted by like 4-6 different servers while you eat and it's really overly-attentive. I know this is a minor gripe, but I like to be left alone to eat my food, not talk to 5 different strangers. If I had to guess, it's probably company policy. They have to peddle various desserts and so on, which gets old.
Still, the new Blue Mesa is now open in much better view in Addison. It's easy to get to and can be found on Montfort just south of Beltline near that Mi Piasi place that I've also never been to.
